As a former archaeologist, I view the world in layers from the top down: surfaces to hidden depths. As an artist, I create layers from the bottom up, beginning with an impressionistic wash and then building up texture and value contrasts. Although sometimes I paint in oil or acrylic, my favorite method is to work in watercolor (both transparent and gouache) with added layers in colored pencil or pastel. Growing up on the East Coast with summers on Cape Cod or in Maine probably explains my preference for landscapes (woods, water, and sky). Currently, I am experimenting with more abstract ways to create distance and depth in my paintings.
