Ralph Roether

As a professional graphic designer for over 30 years, I often infuse my graphic design sensibilities into my artwork and I have painted on various types of wood instead of the traditional canvas. Although, I have painted on canvas recently. My style ranges from semi-realistic portraits with typography to cartoon, doodle, graffiti-esque creations. I often resort to creating stream-of-conscience doodle drawings on a paper, bar napkins or sketchbooks. I then scan these doodles into my computer, colorize them, and make prints on paper, canvas, or shirts. I have also done some mural work. I have participated in various art shows; including DirtyShow/Dirty Detroit (3 times), solo shows at Indigo Art Gallery, the University of Illinois Illini Union, and 40 North Boneyard Arts Festival in Champaign County, IL. My artwork has been published in Studio Visit Magazine, Art Voices Magazine, and the Artist books 101 Artist and 50 Contemporary Artists curated by Terrence Sanders. My artwork has been reviewed and featured on VoyageChicago Web site. One of my pieces was used in a living room scene for the feature film X-Men: Days of Future Past. I create work that is fun and allows me to explore. I currently have a permanent rotating gallery of work at Pour Bros. Taproom in Downtown Champaign, IL.
